A Rainy Day in New Jersey

by Jeffrey Parren

The forecast calls for
rain
in NJ today.

I know why.

my mother left us.

This is also
my first
not in NJ
to mourn.

Even though
the sun will be shining
here in Vegas
like it always does
my mind and heart
will be amongst
gray skies.

I'm on the cusp
of something great
and it could have
never happened
without your diligence
and personality
that you bestowed
upon me.

Your “honey bunch”
is doing well for himself
and I'm sure you're
not surprised
though as I advance
in age and knowledge
I'm in awe
of how much
you had to just let me be
and find my own way
even through mistakes
you saw happening.

On this “anniversary”
of your passing
I choose to celebrate
a life you led
the way you wanted to
and for bestowing me
with a gift of knowing
that you were happy
with the ways things
turned out.

I'll forever miss you
and love you
for all that you did
to make me who I am
today.

The pain
is not so tangible
not any more,
but I get choked up
every time I think
about all the things
I will eventually
experience
and wish

I could see
your face

or hear
your voice

or give you
one more hug.

I'll
love
you
always

Mom.

We fail far too often to thank our parents for who we are. Very nice write.

As a parent I hope that I make such an impact on my kids as your mother did with you. Thanks for sharing
