Your Heart Understood Mine

by Melissa Arel

I had hidden my heart for so long before I met you.
Tucked away deep within me, protected by bone and mortar
my ribcage became a prison; steel bars impenetrable
to the common man or his wily advances.
Though many saw the treasure lying in humble isolation,
wanting to claim it for themselves, no one was ever able to.

My love was a gift given carefully,
not a prize to be conquered or subdued by force.
So when you came along I resisted, unsure of your intentions.
The scars from past sufferings were freshly imprinted
upon this scarlet vessel of mine, branded
by the carelessness of others.

But you were gentle and understanding, softly assuring me
that you were not like the rest. ā€œIā€™m not going to hurt you,ā€
you whispered, my face cradled in your palms.
I searched your eyes and knew you were speaking the truth.
It was then at that moment, my heart understood yours.

Author's Note: Yeah, he wound up hurting me more than any other. Smh. You live & learn I guess.

first of all this is beautiful. Second and only minor, I found the format a bit distracting and had to refocus my eyes a couple of times to remember where I was, maybe breaking down into shorter lines would have stopped that. Or maybe lengthening my attention span may work too. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

I agree with Shannon that stylistically you might have shortened the lines into stanzas for readability's sake. However, the language, the emotion and the depth of feeling testify to a love long-sought and finally won. In short, beautiful work!
