Dropping the ball

by Shannon McEwen

Throwing balls into the air with ease
Up, up, up, endlessly lifting
All the while thinking it’s a breeze
Cycling thoughts constantly sifting

Seemingly having it all under control
Adding more and more to the dance
Whirling, swirling in an upward roll
No thought to the element of chance

Arrogance leaves a bitter taste
When what goes up comes down
Perfect precision gone to waste
And this smile wears to frown

And all the balls now tumbling
Graceless moves to stop the fall
While tired hands are stumbling
Unable to hold on to them all
