Jumping through the hoops

by Shannon McEwen

The desire to rest a weary brain
Finally refrain from harried thoughts
And stop the chaos, nothing sought

Instead of priorities fought...and won
Until they came undone
Twisted and turned, then wholly burned

Into every empty space and an unnamed face
Plastic smile cracked in place
And the puppet strings in a disjointed waltz

That’s no one’s fault but the master
Who pulled the strings faster and faster
Not realizing they were her own
