a humble atheist's prayer by Danny WashingtonAs an atheist he prayed
As a man he despaired
As a being he barely existed
His corner of the world
Was present without past
Without the weight of a church
He could not explain why
When he wanted to cry
He made the sign of the cross
And looked up the skies
And let out a sigh
And never received a reply
Now he sits again
With his head in his hands
And repeats his favourite prayer
Without a belief in God
I am totally lost
Without form and void 07/31/2011
Author's Note: In the face of all the available evidence, even if I wanted to believe, I simply couldn't

Posted by Mo Couts on 07/31/11 at 02:22 PM What a poem, Danny! Sometimes I find that religious poetry is overbearing but this piece is so soothing and true to form that I got your message loud, clear, and strong. Nicely done. |
Posted by Joan Serratelli on 07/31/11 at 04:41 PM A VERY gusy write. I am an Agnostic/borderong on Athiest= yet I am a Jew by birth. Out of respect to my father, I STILL write G-D. I kn ow it makes little sense, but in my own way, I find solice in prayers (silent). I don't judge anyone on their belief system. It's private.
Great write! |
Posted by George Hoerner on 07/31/11 at 08:11 PM I am an agnostic but know that if he came down to earth I would refuse to bow to one so powerful and yet unwilling to save those children in need. |
Posted by John Stevens on 08/03/11 at 02:54 AM Good piece. I guess we are looking at different evidence. Having studied physics (BS degree) and how things work all my life, it turned opinion into fact. I wish you well in this journey called life. |
Posted by Philip F De Pinto on 03/01/12 at 10:05 PM this is a wonderful thought provoking piece. as far as atheism is concerned, I feel it takes as much faith to believe in God as not to and so atheism for me falls under the heading of just another sort of religion, whose merits are as legitimate as any other. I mean, what is the difference in believing and not believing, but both are filtered through the same system that can hold both to be true or false. |
