Dirty Down

by A. Paige White

Life might be dirty down by the Kanawha
With humans sweaty and smelly too
But it means she’s spent time paddling
In that river of cares
Looking and listening for the one who comes calling
To sing her own tune
And put her melody within her beloved feathers
For when those feathers find the wind.

Now she flies in, I’m adopted as friend or kin
That sings to her at dusk a melody for our King
Yes, she knows it is for Him alone when she flies in
That I’ve lodged my song in her wings
For when her feathers find the wind.

It is for Him
I cast the bread upon the water
It is for Him
When it’s even hotter
It is for Him that I sing
And lodge my song in her wings
For the times when her feathers find the wind
And she knows me as her friend.

Author's Note: We've named her Duckchess of the Kanawha. Kind of cool to be so firmly adopted by a mallard. Of the ten that accompanied her a few days ago, her down was the cleanest.

Charming poem - I can so relate to kinship with other species - love "...I've lodged my song in her wings for when her feathers find the wind..."

what can be lovelier than this lovely little ode to the Duckchess, a ode which will not be rolling off her back any time soon, but will seep in deep as all good odes worth their mallards do.
