The Way It Is

by Joan Serratelli

I live in a world
where I do not fit in
I try desperately
to maintain
a cetain level
of normality
Conforming equals failure
to be me;
...an outsider;
looking in, but stil lurking
waiting for an invitation
It's all so surreal
afraid of rejection
but I am different
IF I am indeeed "normal"-
is everyone else MORE normal?

Frankly speaking, I think normal varies from person to person; as the saying goes...it's relative. The question is can two or more people live together without dysfunction in the household. If not then the answer is clear. Me thinks as long as any one of us isn't robbing banks or murdering others, then we're OK. Sorry for the long windedness Joan, but your short poem has got me going on a topic I've given a lot of thought to.

how about this, Joan..instead of wondering if everyone is more normal than you, how about celebrating the fact you may be unique and everyone needs to catch up to you..:)
