How do poets say goodnight?

by Steve Michaels

How do poets say "goodnight"

How does a poet say goodnight when

God jumps up and blows out the night?

does a poet stand on his chair and wail

swaying to the beat of a frothy ale?

Does a poet stomp his feet on the floor

rapping out beats Ginsburg beat before?

Does a poet throw his keyboard at flinching wife

demanding his whiskey and wrist-cutting knife?

Does a poet writhe and wriggle through vomit

agony-laden with words he's lost touch with?

No, a poet does not make more scenes than

he's bought

doesn't stoop to the pity vote

in lieu of harvesting words to emote

A poet stands with his head held high

arms extended to those he loves

says goodnight wishes with

kisses and hugs

then trudges stoically up goodnight stairs

to the top

to the top

of newborn nightmare

and waxes his forehead

to increase the shine

as he surges toward intersection line

adieu

adieu

it's now night-night time.

This is the first piece I have read of your work. Very clever, no forced rhyme, neat alliteration and a theme to force another read of this beauty. You did well Master Michaels. You did very well indeed!

How refreshingly interesting, amusing, vividly visual - poke a poet and see what you get. Thanks for this.
