A heart hid under an orchard tree bleeding

by E. A. Pugh

A heart under an orchard tree
knelt
wet
hidden
hoping for relief
A heart hid under an orchard tree bleeding
rashy and wounded
hoping

Heart under an orchard tree
knelt
wet
hidden
hoping for relief
Heart hid under an orchard tree bleeding
rashy and wounded
hoping

Hand hovered out the backdoor
Hand went looking for Heart bleeding in the dark
Hand glided thirteen walnut trees deep into the orchard
thirteen walnut trees deep into the orchard
and found Heart lain against a dripping tree
slouched in the earth alone quiet bleeding.
Hand found Heart lain against a dripping tree

gently silently Hand held the artery in quiet communion
Come my heart
get out of the rain.
Heart bled under and orchard tree
Hand gave lending to lift

Come my heart
get out of the rain.
Into the home the Heart by Hands’ will did drift
Inside the kitchen
Hand placed Heart on the table
a wet soft cloth Hand damped the bleeding places
then put the kettle on
Heart sat on the kitchen table slowly healing.
Heart mending it's self with Hands kindness
but Heart questioned Hands intentions
the kettle blew Hand went to the cupboard
to get the pretty set and brew licorice tea
a dollop of honey Hand mixed in
in silence Heart sat on the kitchen table
weeping wounds beginning to close
Hand went for the favorite blanket
to swaddle Hearts weeping wounds
Heart sat upon the kitchen table wrapped in a blanket beginning to forget the weeping
But still in the left ventricle of Heart a clear mucus coating of Hand and all that Hands do to break Heart pooled clear sticking
deep inside unseen
A Heart sat on the kitchen table recovering but not forgetting the horrible things Hands can do.
Hand held out the sweet liquorish tea.

Definitely one of the most unique poems I've read in awhile. I was alternately heart-warmed ;) and creeped out that the heart was heading for the kettle or pot. I enjoyed the depth the orchard aspect gave to this.

It's amazing and wonderful as hell how much ground this poem covers. I was in this thing from start to finish.
