Love's Infinity

by Jody Pratt

How many times have you fallen in love?
Can you count them all,
the loves of your life?

Every sunny day spent outdoors
with friends and frisbees and mud.
Pictures of you covered in mud.
Your first clubhouse, your first house,
your second homes.
The carnival; the rides and games and
the food.
Oh the food!
Eating it, sharing it, throwing it.
The experience of fine dining
and finger foods.
Cooking for a loved one,
cooking from a loved one.
Dinner with the family and
barbeques with everyone.

Holidays, birthdays, parties,
snow days! Stormy nights and
hot chocolate.
Rainy days, no umbrellas and
walking with nowhere to be.
Singing terribly and making sure
everyone can hear.
So many songs old and new and
remembered like yesterday.

Your first car and worst car.
Your first cat and worst dog and
the time you caught your first frog
in summertime. Summertime.
Water; cold and refreshing. Drinking,
diving, swimming, splashing, bathing and
cannon balling.
Lakes, rivers, waterfalls and the ocean.
Mountains, canyons, valleys and
your own backyard.
The small towns and the big city.
The place you grew up and the places
you dream of going; getting there.

The blue sky, the stars, the fullest moon and
meteor showers.
Laying on the grass deciphering the clouds.
Sitting by the camp fire enjoying a beer
and hotdogs and marshmallows and stories.
Bedtime stories putting you to sleep.
The way your best friend tells stories and
stories that get you in trouble.

Your favorite books and movies and
the board games you played as a child.
Being a child.
Finger painting, playing in the sand,
screaming at the top of your lungs
simply because you feel like you can.
Being right, giving gifts, your talent,
your passion, your work, your life.
Then you fall in love with being loved.

Best of all; the people.
It starts with your mother
the moment you open your eyes.
Love is the very first thing you know.
You love your family
even when you hate them.
Somewhere along the way you meet yourself
and inevitably fall in love.
You find that special someone and
love every moment with them.
You do it over and over, until
you find the one.
You have children and love them.
They have children; you love them.
You make friends that you love and
sometimes you lose them; never completely.

You fall in love with pieces of people;
the way they laugh and make you laugh
until it hurts.
A strangers smile or
unexpected generosity.
A friends poor advice, a siblings heroism,
and a lovers every touch.
You realize that all these people have also
fallen in love with you and
love is infinite.

I really enjoyed the positive eclectic message here Jody. One I'm sure we all can relate to. Always happy to meet a fellow Canadian on this site, this time thanks to your response on my Forum posting. Continued success with your poetry! :o)

What a message, Jody. After reading this poem through and then doing so, again...I wholeheartedly agree with the message =). Nicely done!
