Nothing 101

by Dan Garcia-Black

God lived in nothing
and he was everything
So the nothing was everything
and God was all of it.
He extended his hand
and created light, dark, water, air,
land and, finally, animals.
One animal thought he was everything
and decided to create something
(from the nothing around him).
He extended his hand,
in it was a pen.
He scribbled on a blank page
and the other animals read his words.
They were filled with awe at this act
of creating a world of words
out of thin air.
He protested.
He assured everyone
that what he had done
was nothing and from nothing.
They insisted that He read his work.
He compiled.
He pulled out the first page
and pronounced,
“Let there be light,”
Creation, after all,
is the job of the writer.

Creative lines stacked on top of more creative lines. I love how briskly this thing moves us towards that great finale.
