My Hero, My Daughter In Law

by Alison McKenzie

This is when it matters most,
Days that stretch the roles
Until we are sure we can’t take another minute.

The dog barf
And the dried blueberry mush;
The dishes and
Ten pairs of feetless shoes
Which manage to trip you
None-the-less;
And the salad, which
By the smell of it, is
Ten days past the pull date;
The unfolded laundry
And a genuinely ill husband.

This is when it matters most,
The kind word,
The giggle that says “no big deal”;
The bowl of love soup,
The endless patience;
The unwavering courage –
Days that turn into years,
Stretch, somehow, into a lifetime,
Shaped by hands that caress
A lump of family into souls;
Taken in by the appreciative eyes
Of the mother-in-law
Who knows, oh so well –
This is when it matters most.

Author's Note: I know things get rough sometimes, but I still feel so blessed to be part of this lil unit I belong to at the moment. She does an amazing job, my daughter in law, Tamara.
