Only An Ocean to Cross

by Tony Whitaker

Dreams steeped in
your fulsome fiery smiles
stirring glowing embers
that burned out of control
in my soul

The shocking blush of such bold beauty
sitting in my assigned seat
in stunned silence staring
as you sat beside me
mind and heart depart
separate battle camps
“I would die for you”

I remember holding you, once
close as we kissed

Those times with you now melted
into serene scenes
you and I and a desert isle
perpetually perfecting paradise

You never knew the creeping madness
sleepless nights and dull delights
in the closing of the dream
the world’s greatest lovers lost
the lottery of a life together
in time to a reality which soon fades

Potential for violence is not a crime
murder by broken heart - capital

This thorned and narrow path
will sow our seed of friendship
where the bloom of youth
lost to the joy of growth
beneath your smile
sprouts seeds of joy

Here now, the real world
lives tossed to distant shores
from rapture to reality
sandy beaches for love-starved souls
and only an ocean to cross
