Children 4: Quite and adventure for people under four feet.

by E. A. Pugh

Kids, get your jeans on so the thorns don’t get you.
Here is this dress, it will keep the thorns out.
Children, lets adventure in the back forty
I will teach you to blaze a trail
I will show you to love your nature.

My motley crew,
Big Momma and a girl and boy not yet four feet tall.
Momma takes the backpack with juice packs.
Little three year old boy helps to drag the sack of broken banister rungs.
Little girl carries the large plastic sand box lid.
Mommas got a plan.
Momma knows how to blaze a trail through the thickets.
Mommas’ going to teach her kids how to live in nature.

To the culvert and roadway to the start of the trail we blazed yesterday
Big momma smashes and flattens blackberry
crunches a thorned vine unamed.
to blaze a trail to the over grown shack
Big momma throws rungs on the longest berry vines that
run across the new trail.

It is obvious that none have come
to the three story shack in many years.
The floor is rotted but the ground floor has windows and folded plastic in the eves
For insulation
It is creepy inside.

Momma must care for her nearly helpless young and push on to blaze a trail
To build a new path home.
Half way through our bush whacking adventure
Mommas’ charges begin to fall apart.
Little Bubs has something in his eye.
Little Eydie begins to complain of anything
Suggesting the only remedy is hot coco.

Only half of the train blazed and mommas’ companions have begun to fall apart
Children crying and momma holding small hands.
Momma pushes through the deeply forested land.
At last the clearing is reached
and little Eydie whines about
wanting to come back tomorrow.

At home momma gives them some soda
with ice in red plastic mugs.
Young boy is still crying.
Goop is dripping out of every wet spot on his head.
He drinks 32 ounces of water.
Falls asleep
Quite and adventure for people under four feet.

And one they will not forget! I loved the "big mamma" presence, those blasted blackberry vines, that shack is pretty foreboding. Great last line to this.
