Heir to the Hierarchy

by Anita Mac

When it comes to existential crises,
I come by them honestly,
as Maslow would concede.

I live fighting for existence
by virtue of being raised
knowing how to do only that.
That pinnacle of Hell and luxury and
no, no sob story,
just reluctance to face the next level.

We all move on,
one way or another;
ripples or no
and no one to blame but ourselves,
should we find blame worthwhile.

And when I lie awake
shaking with Humanity’s tears,
it’s not the fear that hurts most;
I worry that doubt is contagious.

Who would want that on her conscience?

Author's Note: I'm a bit lost creatively and spiritually... I know this reads like something from high school.

Maslow might regard it as ironic that regression can revitalize the humanist approach to a crisis :>
'Hell and luxury' is a sublime representation of the paradox that can frustrate the climb to self-actualization. (Not that I'd know -- I'm buried somewhere in the foundations...)

(For once,) I agree with what Doom says about Maslow.
From high school? No ma'am. People wish they could write like this in high school. $#%@, go into my library and I have things from high school. This is 100 times better, love. Some would argue there is really no such thing as being lost, and really, isn't there a fine line too small to even notice between spirituality and creativity? Some would even argue the two cannot exist without each other. Some people are better lost.

this is definitely no high school piece. i would show you some of mine, but i'm pretty sure they all found their way to the dump a long time ago, thankfully. i feel the second stanza. quite familiar.

I thought it read like something really freaking awesome, but that's just me.

I agree with the others. And this is very good. I like it.

Not at all as per high school. Excellent spiritual poem. These lines especially blew me away: That pinnacle of Hell and luxury and no, no sob story, just reluctance to face the next level. I can so relate to them. Thanks for that, and the poem as a whole!
