You may have this but not that by E. A. PughNo because I said so
because I am not going back on my word
for the sole reason that when asked
I said you may have this but not that
I said you may have this but not that
I don’t care if you cry
Or rather I do
it tares at my heart
I do care you are crying
But I will not give in to you
I will not give in to you
because I said
No
I want my true
True
to my word
for better for worse
it’s what came out my mouth
its not a bad thing
just a thing
and if you choose to cry
you do
I
can not be untrue to my word
this event is of no
horrible consequence no,
No because I said so
Because I want my true
my word
my words
True to my word
True
No
Son
You can
Not
have the can
soda can
because I said so
and because
I love you.

Posted by Alison McKenzie on 02/18/11 at 05:11 AM Oh, the number of times I've used those words. Ok, maybe not in THAT order, but, um, yeah. :)) I love your mommy heart!!
Posted by Rhiannon Jones on 02/20/11 at 07:06 PM I love this, and the oddly repeating-and-building way in which you put it on the page.
Posted by Philip F De Pinto on 02/23/11 at 02:06 PM this poem is a beauty of a reminder that concerning my wee loved ones I tried my darnest to be true to my word, but their screams that they just had to have their confection drowned out my ever hearing the truth in those words, my very own.

Not JUST because this mirrors my own philosophy, but 'You May Have This But Not That' is a good guide for any parent. 'No' without qualification is not fair to the child. 'No' the way you present it, with love and understanding (but conviction) sets parameters and conveys your self esteem, as example, to the child. This is a GREAT lesson.
