Closer to Barbie 1

by E. A. Pugh

Barbie is a lesson in poverty.
I am poor and cannot afford all that.
I cannot afford tiny-paired boots fur jackets sunglasses and all that.
The closer to Barbie I get, the more I am defined by a doll.
My skin is also pink
I am Barbie faced the closer to Barbie I get the more I am judged and compared to a doll.
Strangers may wonder where my life went wrong
Why I do not live clean and emulate the upper echelon to which I potentially
Belong.
I am poor and do not belong.
Other girls drive pink cars and have blowup couches in plastic mansion.
My brunette Barbie rides in a black shoe.
Patented black limousine shoe; it snaps on my moms foot for dance class on
Sunday afternoon.
My Barbie came to me in a brown bag.
She and the other dolls were gifts from an older girl in high school.
My Barbie’s hair is brown not blonde.
My Barbie has no pearls on.

This poem vibrates with a unique sadness, as I'm sure all readers will immediately pick up on the gradual loss of identity, replaced by that stereotypical image of the Barbie Doll, and how all women should fit her figure, wealth, and place in society. Scary stuff!

The voice of this poem seems to change about half-way through....which I find very interesting. I like it.
