Horse Race

by Jeffrey Parren

In this horse race of a life
there are many starting gates
and finish lines
as well as point A's to B's
intersected by options
and ideas of a better path
yet it never quite feels
like I have gotten anywhere.

I enter the gate most eagerly
with anticipation
and thoughts of grand possibilities
but the grinding motion
of experience builds
the memories of steps
and as I continue to bruise
the idea of crossing any line
has suddenly become a fear
that maybe the struggle
was not worth it at all
so I never bother to complete
any of the tasks
that seem just a length away.

Worthy use of extended metaphor to deliver a personal message. Kudos!
