XVII - Tooth and Claw

by Austin Halling-Rowe

A jealous mistress minds my heart.
Days are long and years but night,
That she demands my love apart--
Keeps me fed like veal lambs in the dark.
She is my childhood dreams un-aged;
She walks with me in my searches
Of stillness and storms of change,
And licks clean my bloody sores of failure.
Oh, dear lady who tries (not knowing
She thrives within) to seduce me.
Not knowing jealous mistress’ only
Rule by law of tooth and claw - she
Leaves my lady and me with wounds
So deep that daylight shines!
