I wake before the alarm.

by Melanie J Yarbrough

It isn't fair to use phrases such as
"all the men I've loved,"
but I use them anyway.
I assume things about their women - both
past and present tense. I am
ruthless and discriminating,
I crawl in tall grass and exhale,
rumbling and guttural.
I lie in this queen-sized bed that Nabi left
for me, head down and eyes closed,
and blame each of them
by name.

This is wonderfully sharp--there's a cool viciousness to it. And you found the best line you could have used to conclude it.

This is a wonderful piece Mel, as are the three other poems of yours I read. Fresh, concise, and with a lasting impression.

I do like how you deliver this with both thought and action. The grass image is so primal. Great ending.

Worrisome at best. We often ponder on the 'what ifs' and it never gets us anywhere but more tired than we were before. Great write and congrats!
