seven summer haiku by Jim Benz
June rain
our cucumber vines
gnawed by rabbits
...
an old man fishing
scowls at the otter
also fishing
...
summer heat
a hand-wringing fly
tests my patience
...
green apples
bouncing on the sidewalk
summer wind
...
endless prairie
a sudden splotch of yellow
on the windshield
...
crescent moon
beneath the tiki torch
an empty beer can
...
just before dawn
a thousand frogs
swallow their voices

| Posted by Glenn Currier on 07/31/10 at 03:27 PM Oh man, each one of these is a jewel. Got a chuckle from the frogs and the sudden splotch. The joy of your gentle, careful observation is multiplied seven fold here. Thanks a bunch, Jim. |

| Posted by Stephan Anstey on 08/06/10 at 03:45 PM The frogs one is very effective. I don't know why, but the "june rain" bothers me for some reason, I think it's because of hte relationship to the other non-specific summer references afterwards. I actually think the next two lines of that are my favorite. The bug splatter one really works in the context of this series. I love that little surprise/tweak in there. |

Spot on, one could say. Love the change in perspective in this one.
