i didn't get here alone, jack (w/ anita mac auslan)

by Morgan D Hafele

Echoes bounce readily
through the space between us
off these walls we built.
My breath weighs
heavily on my chest --
claustrophobic in my own body.

My youth and maturity
are interchangeable;
an armor for every occasion --
an occasion for every breath.

My heart beats uncontrollably
and my past seems a savory riddle
against the future's
bland ambiguity.
The dark unknown
I can't seem to shake.

And I can't seem to help
getting lost in my head,
remembering the taste -- you
never shared,
something lost over the horizon.

We ended up just shuffling through
this maze of walls,
never quite sure
which ones belonged to whom.
Never quite caring
as they did their job...
just a little too well.

You guys did a great job on this -it intertwines beautifully without missing a beat, no matter the implied angst and pain and bitterness. Definitely a fantastic collaboration!

Quite the impactful piece, that has direct corrolation to various elements in some fo my own (long term) relationships. What I especially like about this poem is how that first stanza effortlessly pulls me into the experience, and also the fact that despite being co-written, the stanzas and continuation of thought are seamless; unlike some others of this genre that I have read. Hat's off to both you and Anita. Adds to favorites.

This is really enticing. I really like the idea of my past being a savory riddle! Excellent writing you two!

I like pieces where you can follow images in your mind. This is a great piece to follow. The 2nd stanza is wonderful. The last stanza tied things up wonderfully.

Themes of imprsionment and regret weave through the stanzas like a prison guard making sure the reader feels trapped. The words the two of you chose are very potent. Great collaboration!
