pathetic slug in the mirror

by A. Paige White

The two miniature gorillas
alternately scream for an authority to intervene in the fight they initiated
laugh hysterically at each other's pain
and protest that they did pick up their half of the mess
while the dentist speaks in the most proper english
annunciating each syllable of his threats so well
I have to check my thesaurus to be sure he hasn't abused
his liberty with "the", after all
We started this with one and even used it twice in one line
They continue to scream and climb the walls
He continues to issue ineffective threats
I continue to abuse "We", he has no idea
I credit him for the inspiration from my safe zone
when he brought his two gorillas and their avatars over to play
*pen the pinhole on the butt hole

I retreat behind a closed door
at the keyboard, cringe and hide
so glad my presence is neither desired nor required
while I wait to see if the man I once married twice
will respond to my grapevine notice
about his oldest son following in our footsteps
with a shoe size so large his wading gene pool
will hold all the tears we ever cried
and the swimmers born when our failures died

It's quiet now, all the natives went outside
following the one who blows smoke
theoretically to avoid the smoke we blow
and I measure the space between
each of these letters I type for lies
and the space between words for any reference
to how a visit is seen
by essay when you hide your eyes

Author's Note: Inspired to try this style by one of Gabe's latest sagas (great hopes and magic tricks for all) and a visit from two little gorillas and their dentist.

This reminds me, oddly enough, of those letters you get at year's end from the seemingly obscenely happy families, with all of their news that makes your teeth hurt and your gut ache...only you read between the lines as an impartial observer and you start seeing their real neuroses and screw-up and the fact that they secretly want to tear at each other's jugulars... *cough* Yes, well...it's brilliant, even if my above comment seems totally bizarre. So there.

...and when gabe reads this baby he'll absolutely go ga-ga...Paige, on purpose, i read it twice[before i even TRIED TO REMEMBER it was you]and several times after that. it is so much that, as sick as i am, could put all sorts of worlds in between each line; a pome, made of pomes...each line drug me along. first, i was paul bunyan: big, stalwart etc. then i was walter mitty, inserting myself and looking around like there was a picture and i could look in the frame...a simple[to people]trip to the dentist and you drew a Rembrandt. girl i loved this one, so much mama, granma, wow. evidently i loved it.

Paige, I adore this work and the credit to Gabe in the notes. You've worked it well, and there are lots of little twists and niggles in it, but definitely penned by your own unique voice darlin'. LOVE IT!!!

Well, I am still in the middle of that middle stanzas, looking outside at the birds on the bird feeder trying to deny the mist in my eyes. I like this evocative piece, Paige, and am still wondering how many gorillas were there and thinking about the dentist-zookeeper and what he might have been wearing. Thanks for the ride.
