Darkness

by Jeffrey Parren

My eyes are open
to this darkness of my mind
and I can be two people
at once in this life
or maybe more
but true happiness
for me
is when I can be me
the one me
all the time

all life is a stage
the director hates you
and you do what you can
to survive it all
where the good
mostly falter in obscurity
while the ruthless
always have each square
that's made for them
living the high life
while the good and innocent
have to clean up
their mess.

We keep trodding the boards, time and again, searching for that perfect role, the career-making role, the life-giving role...the role of our true selves, where scenery and costume and makeup are rendered superfluous in the face of our nakedly triumphant performance...

Gees, I can relate to this so much. It has taken me a very very long time, but I feel some comfort with my own "me" mentioned in your first stanza. And as soon as I start getting complacent with that, of course life slaps me in the head and kicks me in the ass and says: "Who the hell are you anyway?" Thanks for this thoughtful piece.

Who better to write such a piece than a 'server'? Nicely done Jeffrey. You serve and then clean up after the mess we make and you get back at us by writing about us. Well done sir!

...echo, all the above...someone said life is one thing after another; he was corrected: life is one thing ON TOP OF ANOTHER...slight wording difference, humongous meaning difference...your words made the difference.
