Philodendron

by Glenn Currier

You could pass Philodendron
trammeling her toes
with your left clodhopper
unaware of her love
and the scores of her cousins
who circle the tropics
an emerald satellite
of earthiness
caress and quake
in the warm breeze
sensuous dancers
flash their tongues and ruby smiles
wave palms and fingers
soak up every random glint
sighing air and life.

Author's Note: I took up Bruce Niedt's poetic prompts to use the words: flash, satellite, and clodhopper. I don't know why but the word Philodendron came into my mind. Discovered that there are more than 900 different species.

Bruce's prompts will get you, won't they? I've attempted several of them and really enjoy the exercises. You captivated me with this poem about them. I've enjoyed raising one certain species of Philodendrums for house plants. They're quite hardy. Good thing because of my haphazard tending at times. I know a Phil who has several gorgeous varieties that have an affinity for calling frogs to hang around. This was a wonderful rendering. You even stirred my curiousity to check out some more of the varieties. I had no idea there were so many!

Bruce's prompts are really aiding in the creation of some amazing work...I'll never be able to look at Philodendrons without picturing them as some sort of graceful dancer...you produced an excellent result for the challenge!!!

It is funny the things that can set your mind to work. I will be listening to something on the radio, remember that?, or TV, or even a record and hear one word that for some reason stands out and suddenly other words fall into place and there it is layed out in front of you. Not that it still doensn't require some work but still the motivation is there. Good write Glenn.

You definitely made the most of those words, and yes, "philodendron" is a great word too. Thanks for this flight of fancy.

The green clouds of philodendrons, you've made them come alive...quick, get me to a greenhouse! Excellent,Glenn. Delighted.

You are especially good at weaving natural imagery and emotion together in your poems. This is a perfect example. Though I must admit with the well worded sensual imagery of the flowers, I am looking at plants differently. ;)

you've made me think of the flora in my backyard in quite a diferent light, Glenn..especially since I often stumble among them with Size 12 clodhoppers!
