government check.

by Andrew S Adams

there i sat
with a government check for
four hundred and thirty six dollars
imagining the possibilities;

one can argue about the means
the ways, the facts of taxation-

who should get what,
and what shouldn't get this
and why don't we help our selves
and why should we help anyone else?

and what happened to happily helping
the cause of the common man?

but these questions
are rendered irrelevant
all of them the elephant in the room

ignored by the man,
who had no idea he was getting a government check
for four hundred and thirty six dollars
and can only think of what he could possibly do
with four hunded and thirty six dollars
until he realizes that
four hundred
and thirty six dollars

is not all that much money anymore;
but how it still is to him.
