Spring Love

by Julie Adams

You make me want to race to the tops of trees
and lie there giggling, breathing in the azure sky,
then try to make out sinewy line images of you,
lean as the streaking white cirrus clouds wafting by.

And those clouds remind me of that story I’ll never forget,
you streaking on a dare around your block, required to say hello
to anyone you pass in only your boxers and that precious grin,
until a friend decided exposing your full moon for you was funnier.

You make me want to jump into the paddle lake in Central Park,
and swim through the memory of our time there, walking,
talking like two ducks paired up for spring, or those little turtles
you spotted, cuddling in the sun by the water’s edge.

How we, too, bask in the warm light of young love;
we dove into each other, innocent as children
and as eager, with our time since spent laughing, loving
as precious as the words we share to express it.

You make me want to climb boulders the size of dinosaurs’
bones, set into the earth like protruding hips, and stand
atop them, victorious, awe-inspired, with you,
feeling their smooth magnificence curve beneath us.

On those smooth rocks with you, we were on top of the world,
how we meditated on the brilliance that surrounded us,
like the willow trees, the rippled water, the jasmine air, we were
sitting in the world, and seeing with new eyes, wide open.

how tender, how tender this ode. with such words that you weave, Julie, on such fond reminiscence one reader could be sustained, the infinity of his days and sublimely so.

I am absolutely in love with the forth stanza. I love how it evokes the image of a young almost ridiculous love or maybe just how love makes those of us a little older feel young and fresh. <3
