ocean

by Angela Thomas

the end was terrible. she was in terrible pain.
and watching her struggle, her hand spasming
in contractions that racked her body and caused
her head to be thrown back slightly, her eyes

closing as she tried to manage the tidal waves,
i could not bear to watch her suffer. i prayed
and prayed and prayed for her to be at peace.
no one deserved this. the nurse offered

to make her even more comfortable, steady
morphine at the highest legal doses to calm
the ocean of torment swelling inside of her body.
on her behalf, i begged for acceptance. the drugs

worked quick, like her breath. she began to transition,
floating from this world to the next with a rythmic
huffing and a tremendous will to live. when all the sand
on the shores of her lifetime and the tide that had

been washing it for fifty five years stopped, i cried
tears of joy. for truly, she was at peace now. sad
to see her go and glad to see her leave a failing
earthly vessel as it plummeted towards the ground.

I could not imagine watching someone I loved go through this, well described here.
