a promise is a promise by Angela Thomasthe air moved in and out of her body
with a raspy gurgling sound, putrid
smell that no amount of ammonia,
bathing, or perfume would ever replace
as she heaved and held onto life.
i walked back into the room and sat
with her. she motioned her head slowly
to the door. i asked, "do you want
me to leave?" she closed her eyes.
"mommy, i love you. and if god
wants you for his own, go to him.
i'm leaving now, and i promise
i won't come back in." the nurse
came softly, "after you left i went
to give her the pain medicine
and she didn't need it anymore." 03/21/2010 Posted on 03/21/2010 Copyright © 2024 Angela Thomas
