______ Tales

by David Neubauer

It all could have started
“once upon a time,”
but instead,
we’re living here and now.

We don’t have the luxury
of rabbit-holes, or flying houses,
or beanstalks to the clouds.
We have buildings and concrete,
chain-link fences and No Trespassing signs.
The spiders don’t seem too interested
in curds or whey, content with
picking termites from their webs.

Then, there’s you. You’re not
wearing your ruby slippers anymore.
Click your heels together
three times,
and
your shoes may fall apart,
but no gnomes in sight to mend them.
No princes, no ball gowns,
just pumpkins and mice…
maybe all the fairies are dead.

Perhaps somewhere else they’re
still telling tales about love

The fairy tale metaphor works very well here. Thank you.
