when the house of cards fall

by Jared Fladeland

i reach my hand into
between the window and the curtain
to feel the breeze of ashes.

your face smiles through the glass
and i turn away
to look at the remains of a room smoldering
with your presence.

you call out my name,
but i walk away, to remember
what i was like before an assortment
of movie nights, parked cars, and after-night mints.

i cannot think of a better time
than now, piling up the broken boards
of a burned down house,
finding old rusty nails,
the remnants of a hammer, and building it all back up
just to show you i can.

I really admire the pacing to this, the choice of words slows me down. Loved that first stanza.

To me this piece is simple but speaks volumes because it's like your world is collapsing from underneath you but you're pulling yourself together and refuse to go down with it. Hail to you brother!
