I Dreamt A Nightmare

by Wendy Sparling

A winding footpath,
like an anguiformed snake
stretched endlessly
through citrine slopes.

Grasping toddler hand,
we paused to tie a shoe when
You broke free and jounced
across the scenic shortcut,
not returning with my scold.

I chase with no gain,
and watch as your child-
legs pump faster and faster,
over the Celeste horizon.

In panic, I steer off
the meandering path,
only to lose direction,
losing you forever
I awoke with tears
flooding my ears,
drowning in sorrow.

Author's Note: My son passed away 12 years ago this coming March, and years later I had this nightmare. It affected me so bad I had to write it down on paper just so I could analyze it, and hopefully never dream it again. So far, so good.

This is a vivid read, and as a mother it gives me goose bumps. I like that you've recorded this, despite the sorrowful association.

This is a powerful piece of writing, Wendy, and that author's note only lent tenfold more gravity. Definitely a moving poem, and quite intense.
