My One and Only Valentine

by Alison McKenzie

My only Valentine is silly this year,
Feeling lonely and abandoned,
Familiar among the weeds -
The forgotten ones that always grow
And sometimes bloom,
Even after being yanked out by the root.

My beautiful Valentine looks in the mirror
And sees the years reflected
The neglect born of caring for everyone else first
Because that's the way it must be,
Despite the typically blessed genes,
From behind a face too plump –
The only reason wrinkles don’t tell.

My funny little Valentine
Still dances in the wind,
Sings in the rain,
Hides the hopes
Everyone thinks they seeeeeeee -
Understands that no one really does.

My sweet and impish Valentine
Won’t give me a card,
Or take me to a romantic dinner,
Or offer to take me dancing,
Or buy me roses;
But will love me forever,
The way only a higher self can.

I like how you like yourself. It is a rare treat to read of someone who knows their worth in a loving manner. Thank you.
