The Egomaniac

by Clara Mae Gregory

His nametag spells dog.

But when looking in the mirror,

he only sees god.

Absolutely devastating in so few words.

You said so much with 14 little words. Absolutely brilliant. I LOVE your play on the word "dog". OUTSTANDING- my mouth is still open!

We are all in a sense egomaniacs, or rather, egocentric. But most of the labels we wear are usually pinned on us by others (which inevitably reflect back onto the labelor yet another label.) as self proclamations need an audience to disagree or agree. But you do make your point. The observer has labeled the subject both a "dog" and an "egomaniac," thus implying that the subject must have pinned the words "god" onto himself (mistakenly if he/she were to look into a mirror, thus the cleverness of the poem). But the origin of the label is in question here, as it is unclear if the subject has pinned the label on himself first, or if the observer's labels assume it. So which came first, the chicken or the egg? I am probably looking WAY too much into this, but I do have that problem hahaha ;-) I say let self proclamations (if that's what they are) lie (as they SHOULD be inconsequential), and emotionally charged labels die, as one should not feel injured by gods nor dogs when the self is secure in the absence of any observer. I don't know if that makes sense or I seem to have rambled. But that's how I saw it. I appreciate the opportunity to have thought it out. :-)

Well, all mirrors reflect...what would God's nametag read in the mirror? Let's stop playing god.

Melanie, this is what I'd classify as a ninja star. Short, sweet, and gets the job done. It's devilishly clever. I love the author's note tie-in as well.

A clever piece that shows a lot of wit and self-control. Your observation of the reciprocal nature between “god” and “dog” when seen in the mirror is a biting one, even though I'm quite partial to dogs, I have to say that after reading this and looking at some of the 38 photos you have posted of yourself in your journal, I can tell that your observation skills are keen enough that you could recognize an egomaniac as well as you could yourself in the mirror. Good write and thanks for sharing.

A stinging rebuttal in as few words as possible. Especially those three letter ones. Well stated!

Brilliantly clever and wittingly funny. Thanks for brightening my day. I haven't been on in a while but I'm glad I saw this when I did.

Where can I get some of these nametags, I wish you could tag poems the way you tag pics on FB, cuz I know a few who could use this onel, since they live by such understanding anyway, lol...but beyond that, this piece, so succinct, so direct, but so telling, it shows the strength of your craft, the small g is noticed even without ur note, in fact, kudos poet, no wonder ur on the top rated list!! Peace, jewels
