Blossoming

by Julie Adams

It is his name that means blossoming,
yet I'm the flourishing flower in his gentle light.

Most commonly noted, he's a supporter, an ally,
perhaps that is how he scaled my protective garden wall.

Rumi says much about the wonder of the sea current,
the strong wind, how love carries us along;

I wonder if this buoyancy could be the same
tenderness to which he refers. Am I the ruby,

is he the sunlight, bright and apparent before me;
does he manifest this as his name also suggests.

I wonder at the flowing I feel, the fish in me
that swims like a fry new to the water.

How long can I swim against the rushing current;
I am no salmon.

I wonder at the heights I feel, the stork in me
crossing the sky, gliding into warm air.

How mad can I be to fly against the imposing wind;
I am no swift.

He is part of me now, perhaps he's been there
all along; waiting patiently for me to look and see,

like a mirror, all I ever wanted reflected back;
His light to my ruby soul, his love to my desire.

My heart slowly opens in his hand, a gentle petal.
My lips give way to his kiss, a moment blossoms.

Julie, this is a beautiful ode; it is not short of imagery nor evocative language.

Technical comments (since you solicited):
- 4th line: typo "his" vs. "is"
- I would've lined it differently, but this form has its own positives is still very effective.
- You've punctuated this very well, though, at least once I thought you were asking a question and I was expecting a question mark.

No matter how you slice it, Julie, this is a very good write and a very enjoyable read. Thank you very much for sharing :)

The gentleness to this introduces the magic I feel when watching the progression of a flower blooming over the course of several days. I appreciate the reference to Rumi and the stream, the ruby and the sunlight - really some lovely ideas playing off each other here. I can't think of a more perfect last two lines.

Few people can master the art of a tribute so well and so creatively...it is impossible to deny the depth of affection and care that went into this piece and for that reason along with all others, it is a wonderful thing you have shared with us.

I definitely see the similarities to how we see things, Jules. I particular like the ruby metaphor, in so many facets of it!!! And I like, "I'm no salmon."
