General Synesthetic by Rachel Bennetthey, listen
to my finger tying knots
in subtle twisted green
(a tremor like "seventy-two")
hey, watch
the hot tea's scent
simmering into a sizzle
(and the kettle, it smolders) -
hey, please
talk to the hand
(the brain's on hold).
don't wait for me,
taste the success
of a million salty synapses
(Chardonnay Chaconne)
sparkling in my mind. 01/20/2010 Author's Note: Poemuary #20. (Roughly two-thirds done!)

Posted by V. Blake on 01/21/10 at 02:15 AM Roughly two-thirds eh? Cheers to that. I've always been fascinated by synesthesia, so I got a kick outta this poem--particularly "a tremor like seventy-two." |
Posted by Michael Smith on 01/21/10 at 04:16 AM With a theme like this, I could imagine one easily going overboard, but this does synesthesia true justice. |
Posted by Allison Smith on 01/21/10 at 08:37 AM I love the simmering and sizzle, great description in this piece. |
Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 01/21/10 at 05:05 PM Loved the intermingling of senses, especially the "subtle twisted green." |
Posted by Elizabeth Jill on 01/22/10 at 01:22 AM And I love the conversational tone you give. |
Posted by Therese Elaine on 01/24/10 at 07:18 PM 'A million salty synapses' -now one of my favourite lines of ever!!! (And for once, Vince and I have separate favourite lines!) And Elizabeth is exactly right -there is this fantastic tone which is conversational in the sense that you're crafting a dialogue which is brilliant but also not above being said in a real world context...if you weren't talking to total cretins of course! Love it. |
Posted by Sandy M. Humphrey on 01/25/10 at 08:50 PM I too am a big fan of Therese favorite line, it just feels right and sounds even better...Good write. smh |
Posted by Ken Harnisch on 01/26/10 at 01:59 PM Oh, I can "hear" this poem in my head...wonderful work..Can't wait for the final one-third..:0 |
Posted by Laura Doom on 01/26/10 at 08:10 PM Synthesis of sonics, testament to texture, festival of fragrance, cacophony of colour, this palette of perceptual pandemonium -- makes my eyes water (visual vicissitude).
What is there not to like?
terrible title...ha! it's actually terrific, but I can't collate compliments without conflict

Posted by Rhiannon Jones on 06/04/10 at 12:42 PM I wonder what proportion of synesthetes are poets...or vice versa. "...a million salty synapses...sparkling in my mind" That's great! |
