Horse and Rider

by Rachel Bennett

a start -
in the tacet measure before the tutti
a stampede of hooves, flanks, and nostrils

and the counterpoint from horse to rider
cannot be ignored or mistaken for synergy
between reinholder and limbholder,
because neither will is exerted,

yet each is expressed
in full gallop,
- equilibrium.

Very nicely done Rachel. My kids have ridden for years. My son, the cowboy, has done the whole rodeo thing and my daughter worked for some time at a riding stable in North GA. She helped train horsed do the trail ride bit and endurance racing. I have often thought that the horse and rider each thought they were in control when neither really was. Not unlike some relationships where who navigates and who steers is sometimes in question.

I like the musical allusions early - they put me in the hearing mode even though the poem is mostly visual. I appreciate the counterpoints - playing together yet one pausing, in equilibrium yet not in synergy. I am thinking about neither exerting will as that which makes the equilibrium possible. There is something so mysterious about horses and think you capture a piece of that here. Thanks for imagination-provoking poem, Rachel.
