beautiful awakening

by Melissa Arel

golden bars of light stretch across my bed
inching its way towards my pillow, their
warm fingers tip-toeing across my skin.
the aubade's softness kisses my eyelids awake
and i see the sparkling dust dance and spin
in the illuminated afterglow of slumber.
your body shifts as you lay your arm against
my waist, nestling your nose in my splayed hair.
i can feel your breath on the nape of my neck
while you deeply inhale and exhale lingering dreams.
i could spend all day hibernating in here with you
as you wrap your limbs around me like the
ambrosial blankets i steal nightly and covet.
i hear the pitter-patter of little feet outside
the door; the sweet lark voices of our girls
squealing with glee at their attempts to sneak in.
i can't help but grin at their innocence and
felicity when i let them crawl under the covers
for a morning snuggle. the sheets swell with giggles
and belly tickles, but most of all with love.
what a beautiful awakening.

There's words I'll have to look up here, like aubade..:0 But what struck me about this poem is the imagery being as beautiful as the message. "the sweet lark voices of our girls squealing with glee at their attempts to sneak in" When a line is so perfect the image lingers in your mind then the poet - or in this case, the poetess - has reached lyrical nirvana.

You paint such a vivid and 3 dimensional atmosphere. From a nerdy tv sales guy- that's high definition! And I think you utilized all of the body's senses! It's so well done I hate to taint it with a comment. I'd like to see the ending flow out as delicately as the poem began.

you paint such an incredible image with your words that not even a masterful painter could produce something of this caliber. the simplicity of the moment is captured here and treasured, one that i personally hope to experience in years to come but for now, will reread your piece and dream of 'one day'...
