Fairweathering

by Clara Mae Gregory

Fairweather friends
hurt internal feelings
only if you allow them.

Better to mark those hearts
and move yours on along.
It’s not worth the fret
if they don’t like your song.

True friendship survives,
Despite diversity’s darts.
Sustained by love, it thrives
And will never come apart.

But your fairweather friends
disappear in the end,
somewhere hurting feelings
Of those who will let them.

Author's Note: Friendship is risktaking and involves trust. Not all are true friends but fairweather friends. How does one discern the difference? Of course, not all are friendly to establish any sort of friendship at all---and those are pretty obvious.

the only true measure of lasting friendships are lots and lots of clouds accompanied by brisk winds and thunder and lightning followed by a deluge. if friendship survives those, meteorological critters, then friend, we got nothing to worry about in that dept.
