What lessons lie in a pigeon line?

by Glenn Currier

Passing swiftly under them
I saw a line of pigeons
on an I beam’s southern edge
stooped in fluffy worship
of the winter sun.

I can see them scurry
pecking the sidewalk
in the brightness of summer
iridescent as the fervor
of a new convert.

But who sees the glow
or knows the glory
in the fading coral sky
and wild invading
plumy clouds?

In the calming clear of twilight
when air settles softly
from teeming day
I wonder how
I will stoop and fly.

Oh yes, and how we would all love to fly or for that matter walk and just find the answer to one significant question whether it be mid winter or hot July. Good write my friend.

Well done, Bro. It is indeed iridescent. You are already flying. As the Cowboys are. Got to go, the second half just started.

Much enjoyed, Glenn! It's the sky that makes me want to fly, because it suffers no distinction as it looks down. To the sky, everything might fly. After all, isn't poetry the journal of some sea animal living on land, wanting to fly in the air. See you in the clouds. Thanks.

"Coral sky" is a prime example of your ability to describe things in ways I--and to my knowledge, no one else--would ever have considered.

I absolutely love the imagery here! "I saw a line of pigeons / on an I beam’s southern edge / stooped in fluffy worship / of the winter sun." It's absolutely exhilarating. The whole poem I felt on the verge of flying (but not yet).

Bold imagery, challenging comparison, keen observation of life and what it may mean.

Wanted to start the New Year by reading my favorite writers and, of course you are on that short list. Your use of imagery is masterful with, "fluffy worship", "fading coral sky" and "calming clear of twilight" all so appropo for the words which surround them. Happy New Year Glenn!
