because you left today

by Devon E Mattys

I’m dreaming now of snowflakes
because you left today.
Your caterpillar’s wings broke free
and carried you away.
You flew, my little butterfly,
winged fast into the sky,
and made it safely there tonight;
we know it from your sign.

You sent the snow to let us know
you made it safe and sound.
We needn’t cry or worry
when your love is floating down.
You flew, my little butterfly,
you fluttered toward the sun.
We know your journey’s over now,
the suffering is done.

I’m dreaming now of butterflies
because you left today.
I’m dreaming, too, of snowflakes,
and how fast they melt away.
You’re gone, my little butterfly,
beyond the great unknown.
But every time it starts to snow,
we none shall be alone.

Though it sounds a bit cliche, I truly apologize for your loss. Despite the terrible grief, you manage to craft a poem beautifully in her memory. A little soul lost so young, and yet you immortalize her forever in your piece.

You have my sincerest empathy, this is a beautiful piece.

My deepest condolences for this loss. I really like that first stanza. This feels delicate, ephemeral, and yet eternal. Thank you. Congrats on POTD.
