Thanks for Reminding Me

by Jeffrey Parren

The beauty of poetry contests
is the entry fee not only
covers the processing
but it affords the contestant
a reminder a couple months
after the letter of selection
(or lack of selecting you)
when the publication
is finally released
so you can see firsthand
the other writers
who were better than you.

Because losing the big game
is not quite enough
without ESPN
airing the highlights
on a 5 hour loop
to better recall
the painful truth.

You lost.

Your words were good
(but)
strike a cord
they did not.

Getting eaten
by the bigger fish
a better fighter makes

but the opposing
angst against the winner
creates writing
not so sweet.

So
thanks for reminding me
oh winners so deep
and you too,
contests so alluring,
far and wide...
hopefully
I choose to better my skills
just to spite you
so I can say I am one of you:
a published poet.

Straight forward comment on the feeling of not being chosen. How many baseball games at P.E. was I either last or second to last. But no poem written from the creator within is a loser, much less its author. Keep on keeping on, my man.
