Blue Ridge Blues

by Tony Whitaker

So far
have I travelled
So much
have I done
I’ve skied
the Swiss Alps
strolled beaches
in the sun
But I hail from
the Blue Ridge
of sweet Caroline
so carry
me back there
when my life is done

Oh take
me back home
when my life
is done
the place where
my memories
were made
when I was young

My heart wants
to be there
a trout on the line
riding the ridges
of the Eastern
divide
Whispered tales
in the evening
as we sit
by the fire
dancing shadows
on faces
smiles filled
with desire

Oh take
me back home
when my life
is done
the place where
my memories
were made
when I was young

My Blue Ridge
Mountains
so blue in
the sun
Its swift
pristine rivers
brought so much fun
When the day
finally left us
we'd eat
then drink some
and sing
as we strummed
sometimes
until dawn

Oh take
me back home
when my life
is done
the place where
my memories
were made
when I was young
Yes, the place
where memories
made me
when I was young

Tony, thanks for this ode all the way from Alp-land. I have been in the Smokies and Blue Ridge Mountains and I know the beauty of which you speak. Even alpine beauty fades in the warm cast of homelight on Caroline. I hope you make it back soon. I like the rhymes. They make your poem homey. I can really hear the yearning and some sadness in your poem, perhaps made more poignant by the season when family becomes more important. Love and peace to you today and in the coming year, my friend. Blessings to you and all of your family from Dallas, Texas where we are having our first white Christmas in 80 years.

Love the song, Tony! You know to Adam, Paradise was home. To many among his descendants, home is paradise. Thanks.

This is lovely...so melodic I can almost hear you singing Tony. Beautiful.

Great lyrics! This song needs to be recorded. I think it would be major hit! I really always enjoyed visiting the Blue Ridge Mts. Yes, in someways I think better than the Rockies. The Alps have their own unique attraction.
