Friend Against the Frost

by Michael Smith

Bones bitten by ferocious frost
Hearts bruised by chances lost
In frostiness we find our friends unfold
Offering warmth from the bitter cold

Binding our wounds from the day we were born
Braving the blizzards of life's snowstorm
Pray we stay together to the bitter end
We are ever so fortunate to have a friend

Author's Note:

My mom always loved the Lion King. I never knew though that she took that whole circle'o'life thing so seriously... she decided to pass away on my birthday earlier this month. It is quite a trip! In all fairness, she did miss my birth-time by 30 minutes.

During this month, I have been blessed with the support of friends, and that has inspired this poem.

We can take some comfort from her passing. Nice poem. Love the opening line especially and glad you're writing again.

Love the language in this one. Definitely crisp enough to survive out in the cold.

Sorry for your loss, glad you have plenty of support. Best of this season to you. Hang in there...it's all said very well in your poem here. Thanks.

Sorry for this - but maybe she was racing to a ring side spot to enjoy you on your birthday even more?

That first line really grabbed this reader and seems perfect for what you've been going through. I'm glad you have good friends to help you through your loss. The time of death is pretty amazing - I think she was thinking of you to the end.

And, to continue with the theme, you allow for that cycle of life to continue, but in tandem with the past -you keep her memory alive, you will be remembered by many, you will carry the stories of others -in this, we have continuity. You have my condolences...but my congratulations as well -and I think you'll understand that.
