All We Are by Amie GoldaThey say it takes less muscles to smile
Yet here we are drawn to haunting notes with no rhyme
There are happier songs that have been sung
by musicians so inspired
Yet here we are choosing to wallow in the mire
Once in a while our hearts allow us to be happy;
But consumed by the guilt of our shadows,
In our weakness, our sins thrive
There are brighter days to be had,
Whims of laughter we can take;
But corrupted souls and tarnished beings
Can only cling to the darkness
as they hide from the light of day
As our souls drown in tears and sadness,
On the outside sadness is a mask that thrives.

Posted by Glenn Currier on 01/02/10 at 04:58 AM Your poem alternates between the "spirit and the flesh," the light and the darkness. One of the constant themes of poetry, so yours stands alongside the greats in this tradition. It occurs to me that your poem also echoes the rationale for the name of this website. Thanks. |
