Here There Are Lions

by Rachel Bennett

As lions counting gazelles
(Rounding numbers upwards)
Before whirlwinds of the west,
We wait-
We conquer.

With sinewy toned morals, we ignore
The anxious pleas of foreigners;
With dewclaw paws numb to empathy
From tranquil crawling distraction
We bat away hungry jaws.

Our manes are spun of privilege,
Our tails balance empires.

Isn't that the truth Rachel? We play at being world leaders and yet what we do is based upon opportunities to make a great appearance. As if we would be martyrs until someone reached for the nails and the cross and then we'd shout that's not fair. Good write lady.

Metaphorically, quite a strong piece; and a subtle reminder that a lion must remain strong to fend off suitors to the throne.
