Yesterday

by George Hoerner

oh yes, i remember it well
like a refrain that’s in my brain
it comes and goes at will
bringing them back again

memories of yesterday
that seem to have aged
a thousand years with tears
since the day before

i looked back to find
how much has changed
but stayed the same
without infinite stress

no longer do i see friends
but yes, i do recall
the times we did play ball,
the fights, the nights

the plays that played
a thousand ways and
no one ever clapped
just moved along

to another day of
all the same to me to you
but my life was changed
it slid on through life

but i felt no change
just the tug
of what i’ve lost
and what i’ve gained

...a tug, yes, yesterdays tug at us, make us! a continuity of sameness, yes and the thief of Alzheimers steals continuity...all the yesterdays that are strung together...a great write of the change and it's ever-so-slow, eh?

it seems we've all traipsed along similar lines, George. the friends the kicks the fights, all of it and the wonderful knack of your pen to bring the memory of each to the fore once more where they belong at least for a time to re-examine and re- familiarize one or a score.
