Once In The Forest

by David Cunningham

Once upon a time I hear,
In a forest stood a house.
Guarded by a friendly bear,
Who's best friend was a mouse.

The window sills had flowers;
A smoky chimney sat on top.
The lawn was never tended,
And the veggies quite a crop.

A stream ran through the forest,
Silver fishes in it's ponds.
Trees were tall and bushes thick,
Hiding deer beneath their fronds.

Birds sat on the washing line,
Sharing greetings with a kiss.
Daily sang their wake-up song,
Which went a bit like this:

Good morning! Good morning!
The dark has turned to dawn.
There's mist above the rivers,
And dewdrops on the lawn!

Good morning! Good morning!
The time has passed for sleep.
Sunshine fills the earth anew,
Let's drink the clean air deep!

The forest day was long and bright;
Squirrels played among the trees.
The rabbits chased the butterflies,
Who flew close enough to tease.

When the sun began to sink,
T'was supper time for all.
They ate upon the veggie patch,
While watching darkness fall.

The mummies bathed the little ones,
Who played with boats of leaves.
The mouse scurried home to sleep,
Nestled in the bear's fur sleeves.

The daddies put their young to bed,
Who gurgled sleepy laughter.
The owl hoots the world good night,
And all were happy ever after.
