To Henry Cowell

by Rachel Bennett

I. Deep Color

Suicidal waves crash with little foresight;
The ocean tumbles and rolls into itself,
Wringing its hands and bellowing pentatonic tunes:
It is deeper than it seems.

II. The Fairy Answer

Distorted echoes of today;
No, not what could have been - What is.
I blow kisses to those which remain unseen.
They respond by biting at my ears.

III. Fabric

Dinner parties in another world,
One with words incongruous to each other -
I've forgotten my.
I've forgotten my home.

IV. Tiger

Blood thumping in snare drum veins,
The oboe panics and shrieks.
Hammers rising only to strike
(in a Rite of Spring death dance);
The piano has gone mad.

Author's Note: (Very) loosely connected to Cowell's Piano Pieces.
