"We Were Autumn" by Max PhineasI've never seen leaves fall faster
when we were the wind that shook the trees
It was a fall I'd have taken again
A fall for you
and the light you brought
My boughs were bent
My breath was spent
but my smile could not be shaken.
We shook the branches
and waited for Winter
but only wanted Spring
Rested our limbs against broad trunks
and we were back-to-back
always side by side
You and I were the forest.
I'd give it all
to be the wind again
to shake our branches once more
and find eternal still in each other. 10/31/2009 Author's Note: My metaphors went as crazy as my heart as I got this one out. But it feels truer than many things I know.

Posted by Glenn Currier on 11/01/09 at 04:27 AM All the word play with fall and shake is marvelous, but the depth of feeling and movement of relationship is a strong wind indeed. Wonderful poem to read as my introduction to your work, Max. Thanks. |
